The Institute's programmes consist of research, training, extension and publications, focused on the objective of equality of opportunity and socio-economic development through education. The Institute is unique from the academic standpoint since it believes that education is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary area and tries to analyze interlinkages between education and development.

The Institute’s study-programmes investigate social, cultural, political, economic and psychological dimensions of education.

  Its present focus is on :

•  History of Indian education,

•  Comparative education,

•  Development education,

•  Science and technology education,

•   Rural education,

•  Non-formal basic and continuing education,

•  Teacher education, 

•  Policy, planning, finance and management of education,

•  Education of rural women.

The Institute’s scope of activities has widened in the past 25 years. At present the following Centres and projects of the Institute are engaged in training, research and publications related to education and development :
